Most people don't think about their cholesterol until a doctor tell them. What exactly is cholesterol, and how does it affect your health when your cholesterol level gets too high? Increase your understanding of this common health condition, starting with an explanation of the different types of cholesterol and what those numbers and levels mean for you.

Knowing your risk of having high cholesterol is also important. Some risk factors for having high cholesterol are things that we can change, such as diet and exercise. However, some factors we cannot change like diseases or age. If you have any of the conditions listed below, you are at risk of having high cholesterol and you also should get checked.

If your cholesterol levels are not within the normal ranges, your healthcare provider should recommend a low-fat diet, exercise, medication, or a combination of these. Causes High Cholesterol :
 

Hypercholesterolemia, literally meaning high blood cholesterol, is the presence of high cholesterol levels in the blood. To understand the causes of high cholesterol, it is important to realize that a high cholesterol level in the blood is not a disease. Instead this medical condition can be likened to a metabolic derangement that could be secondary to many diseases and could contribute to specific types of disease like cardiovascular disease. It is closely related to the medical terms.

 1. Hyperlipidemia ( enhanced levels of lipids)

 2. Hyperlipoproteinemia ( high levels of lipoproteins)

 
Other Cause:
 

Poor Diet: Unhealthy foods like saturated fats and transfatty acids are most likely to raise the LDL or Low Density Lipoprotein level in the blood. Saturated fats include animal products like whole milk, cheeses, ice cream, beef, pork, egg yolks, and other foods that are made out of these products. Transfatty acids are mostly present in margarines, processed and fried foods, and in commercial baked goods. With regard to diet and cholesterol, those suffering from high cholesterol levels should be eating plenty of fiber, especially soluble fiber, identified in beans and oats, fruits and vegetables.

 
Symptoms of High Cholesterol :
 

High blood cholesterol comes with no warning signs. Though it poses a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease which could lead to a heart attack or a stroke, people diagnosed with this medical condition often feel fine, and do not take the illness seriously. Unhealthy levels of cholesterol are almost linked to a poor diet, physical inactivity, smoking, stress, drinking alcohol excessively, obesity/being overweight, age, heredity.

Kapha-pacifying diet to help enhance fat metabolism. Favor bitter, astringent and pungent foods. Astringent foods include most pulses or dried beans, such as lentils, split mung dhal, and garbanzo beans. Stay away from the larger beans, but favor the smaller, split kind. Astringent tastes also includes many vegetables, such as the cruciferous family (broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower) and fruits such as apples and pears.
