What is Colitis?

Ulcerative Colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease, which causes inflammation and ulceration of inner lining of the colon and rectum. Inflammation usually begins in the rectum and sigmoid colon and spread upward to the entire colon. The mucosa of intestine is swollen and small red bleeding points are seen. It also includes Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Proctitis. In the long standing disease, size of colon is shortened and narrowed with disappearance of usual folds. Ulcerative colitis rarely affects the small intestine. It occurs at the rate of approximately five cases per 100,000 people. It affects 2 million people in USA. The age group commonly found for this disease is 15-40.

Causes of Colitis :

• Stress, depression and anxiety.
