What is Colitis?

Ulcerative Colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease, which causes inflammation and ulceration of inner lining of the colon and rectum. Inflammation usually begins in the rectum and sigmoid colon and spread upward to the entire colon. The mucosa of intestine is swollen and small red bleeding points are seen. It also includes Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Proctitis. In the long standing disease, size of colon is shortened and narrowed with disappearance of usual folds.Ulcerative colitis rarely affects the small intestine. It occurs at the rate of approximately five cases per 100,000 people. It affects 2 million people in USA. The age group commonly found for this disease is 15-40.

All the reasons that imbalance Pitta are merely responsible for developing Ulcerative Colitis. These include indulgence in too many arguments, eating while watching TV or walking, watching too many violent movies, excessive heat or exposure of the sun, excessive alcohol and smoking, excessive mental activity, skipping meals, spicy, sour or stale and infected foods etc. In Pitta constitution persons, Pitta gets aggravated very quickly with the above factors and patients develop diarrhea followed by bloody diarrhea

Treatment consisted of a combined program of yoga and ayurvedic therapy. Those yogic practices which stimulate and normalize the agni were selected, in accordance with various classical texts of yoga and ayurveda, including 'Charaka Samhita', 'Gheranda Samhita' and 'Hatha Yoga Pradipika'. As indicated in Table 1, every patient had a stress factor aggravating the disease.
