What is Cervicitis?

The cervix is located at the end of uterus, reaching into the vagina. When the exterior tissues of the cervix become inflamed, usually through infection, this is called cervicitis. About half of all women will experience one bout or more of cervicitis in their lifetimes. Cervicitis has several causes. A common cause is insertion of foreign material, such as a diaphragm, cervical cap, spermicidal and tampons into the vagina. Some women develop cervicitis in response to latex allergies, where latex is present in either condoms or diaphragms, or through allergy to spermicidal.

Cervicitis is an inflammation of the cervix the lower part of the uterus extending about an inch into the vaginal canal. Most commonly, cervicitis is the result of an infection, although it can also be caused by injury or irritation (a reaction to the chemicals in douches and contraceptives, for example, or a forgotten tampon). The first symptom of cervicitis is likely to be a vaginal discharge that becomes more pronounced immediately following your menstrual period. Other signs include bleeding, itching, or irritation of the external genitals; pain during intercourse; a burning sensation during urination; and lower back pain. In its mildest form, you may not notice any symptoms at all, but a more severe case of cervicitis can cause a profuse, almost pus like, discharge with an unpleasant odor, accompanied by intense vaginal itchiness or abdominal pain. If the infection gets into your system, you may also have fever and nausea
